Bamford Consulting Ecologists

Mandy BamfordMandy Bamford grew up near the Swan River, watching the creatures that spilled over into the suburbs from urban swamps and bushland. As a child, family camping trips to the bush fuelled Mandy’s passion for nature.

Mandy has worked as a zoologist and environmental communicator for 30 years.  She holds an Honours degree in Zoology from the University of Western Australia and has worked in research and industry, particularly in vertebrate ecology, science communication, waterbirds and wetland rehabilitation. Mandy presents community workshops, writes web-based and printed education packages, books, brochures and signage.  She is a Director of Birdlife Australia, chairs the Herdsman Lake Regional Park community advisory committee and is President of the WA Naturalists’ Club.  Mandy is an occasional guest ecologist on ABC Local Radio in Perth, often in combination with her husband, biologist Mike Bamford.  Mike and Mandy run Bamford Consulting Ecologists, a small team of ecologists who specialise in wildlife research and science communication.

How does your work contribute to Seeing Science Differently?
This quirky and engaging blend of Art and Science fits well into the theme of ‘Seeing Science Differently’ as it aims to promote ecological priniciples of ecosystems in a fun and unusual way. The target audience was festival attendees to a projection festival and included a number of people for whom biodiversity was not a particular interest.  It therefore sought to help them ‘see science differently’ and consider acting to protect and enhance urban biodiversity.
